SVI Sports Recap: January 18-19

Here’s a look at what happened within the SVI Broadcast footprint from Star Valley, Kemmerer, Pinedale and Cokeville.

Star Valley High School
Wrestling: The Braves pulled away in the team standings at the Lander Valley Invite over the weekend as they won the event with a total of 261.5 team points. Powell was second with a204.0 and Douglas was third with 161.5. All Wyoming 3A teams were in attendance. Star Valley put four champions on the top of the podium with Haze Child (120), Tristian Hicks (126), Grayson Hicks (132) and Parker Merritt (285) winning their respective weight classes. Kyle Kunz (160) and Koa DeLong (170) advanced to the finals and placed second.

The wrestling team will be contenders for the Ron Thon championship this next weekend in Riverton which will include nearly every Wyoming team.

Basketball: The Lady Braves routed a pair of rivals over the weekend as they improved to (9-3) on the season. On Friday the girls won in Jackson 61-32 and then returned home on Saturday and steamrolled Evanston, 64-25

The Braves extended their winning streak to five as they clamped down on the Broncs in a 64-45 win on the Jackson court on Friday and then fended off Evanston in a 45-39 effort on the home court. Star Valley will be in Pinedale on Friday and then in Green River on Saturday.

Kemmerer High School
Wrestling: Kemmerer wrestling competing at the Rockwell Rumble in Heber, Utah over the weekend scoring 86 points. Hayden Walker was the champ at 195 pounds in the 66-team tournament. The Rangers will be at the Ron Thon in Riverton this weekend.

Ranger basketball with another tough weekend with both squads going 0-2. The boys lost to Farson-Eden 64-42 and to Wind River 86-35. The girls team lost to Wind River 54-41 and to Shoshoni, 38-35.

Cokeville High School
Wrestling: The Panthers were also at the Rockwell Rumble, scoring 69.5 team points and placing 24th at the 66-team tournament. Bentley Johnson had the highest individual finish as he was fourth at 182 pounds.

Cokeville’s outing against Encampment was postponed on Friday due to weather conditions. On Saturday the Panthers came up just short in an 83-79 loss to Saratoga. The score for the girls game has not yet been reported.

Pinedale High School
Wrestling: The Wranglers placed fifth at the Lander Invite over the weekend with a total of 117.5 team points. Star Valley, Powell, Douglas and Worland were the only teams in front of PHS. Keegan Gehlhausen had the best individual finish as he made it to the championship at 126 pounds and placed second. Kolby Carson was third at 195.

Basketball: The Wrangler girls lost a pair of games to Bridger Valley squads as they lost 51-31 to Mountain View on Friday and then fell to Lyman on the road 63-48 on Saturday.

The Wranglers lost a heart-breaker on Friday as Mountain View’s Hunter Meeks hit a buzzer-beater in a 54-52 Buffalo win. The Wranglers bounced back on Saturday and won at Lyman, 55-49.

Pinedale basketball is at Big Piney this Thursday and then hosts Star Valley on Friday.
