4A West Regional Basketball

Both Star Valley teams will be headed to Casper this weekend for the 4A State Tournament.

The Braves took full advantage of the home court as hosts and rolled to the 4A West Regional Championship with a 56-53 victory over Riverton. Jacob Hodges rolled up 19 points before fouling out and Taft McClure was a steady force all game long with 14. Star Valley survived some late-game heroics by Parker Paxton who also finished with 19 including a circus-shot three-pointer to cut the lead to a single possession.

The Braves got to the championship by defeating Kelly Walsh (57-46) in the opening round and Evanston (60-51) in the semifinals.

On the other half of the bracket, Jackson eliminated Evanston and Cody eliminated Rock Springs to qualify for State. The Jackson then beat Cody 59-51 to claim the #3 seed.

The Braves will open up their tournament on Thursday afternoon as they face the Campbell County Camels at 1:30 pm from Natrona County High School.

The Lady Braves had to dig deep after losing in the opening round to Kelly Walsh, 42-37 and getting put into the Consolation Bracket. After getting past Jackson, 48-9, Star Valley steadily pulled away from Rock Springs, 47-28 to eliminate the Tigers.

Their opponent in the third-place game was a familiar one as they faced the Trojans again, this time from Star Valley Middle School. The Lady Braves gutted it out with their second win of the day as they won, 42-39.

As the #3 seed from the West, the Lady Braves will face the Cheyenne East Thunderbirds in the opening round on Thursday at 4:30 pm. The game will also be played at Natrona County High School.
