Wyoming Paranormal Society comes to Colter’s Lodge to look for ghostly activity

The Wyoming Paranormal Society came to Colter’s Lodge in Afton to do an investigation for ghostly activity in the old hotel.

Owner of the lodge, Tyson Holbrook, says lots of people have reached out to him about looking into paranormal activities since there has been many rumors since the place opened in 1939.

David Burcio, founder of Wyoming Paranormal Society, was one of those who reached out to him.

“I said ‘Why don’t you come on over?’,” Holbrook said.

Burcio says it was a two-day event and the first one was a meet and greet along with giving patrons a tour of the lodge. He says they took some elderly folks into the basement where rumor had it a boy drowned in a pool that was once there.

“The minute everybody, on both nights, that we took down there, the minute they got there they could feel a different dark engery,” Burico said.

He recalls taking two women down to the basement one night and he says one of them is an empath, one who has the ability understand or share a person’s feelings.

“They got really, really depressed,” Burico said. “The hair on the arms would stand up and one of them said ‘I don’t like it down here’.”

He said he brought with him a small team of investigators using equipment you may find on episodes from Ghost Hunters like an SLS camera which picks up motion.

He says he went up and used that camera to film the artwork of the gray lady in the veranda.

“And my camera was picking up a figure right next to the painting,” Burico said. “And it kind of creeped me out.”

So he took someone else up there to be there.

“He could feel like cold coming at him…going through him and then leave,” Burico said. “The hair on his arm were standing straight up and he didn’t want to be in front of that painting either.”

He also says he came upon what is called an “orb”. This is a little ball of light which usually signifies the energy of a ghost. He says it went under a door into a room that is rumored to be haunted.

One of the instruments he uses is called a full spectrum camera. This is used to break down light in all of its forms.

“Ghosts and spirts are technically energy,” Burico said. “So, when you break it down into certain shades of how the camera reflects in the light, it can pick up whatever energy, actually you can’t see with the naked eye.”

He went back to the painting and he said he was trying to figure out what it was. He tried to communicate with this spirit or energy.

“When I asked it ‘are you of a child’,” Burico said. “That’s when it went from one side of the painting to the other side of the painting.”

He says spirits were once people too and so there are good ones and bad ones. So, he says in regards to Colter’s Lodge he didn’t detect anything bad in there.

Holbrook says that is a good thing for his business. If there are spirits or energies in there, it is a good one.

“Casper the friendly ghost is basically the one that’s there,” Holbrook said. “I haven’t seen anything bad and Casper can stay as long as they want.”

Burico also says if anyone has a hard time believing the stories, feel free to reach out to Wyoming Paranormal Society on their Facebook page. He is willing to let you come on an investigation to decide for yourself.
