SVI Radio Interview: Devin Wright with Not Too Shabby – Star Valley Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month

Devin Wright, owner of Not Too Shabby in Thayne, stepped into the SVI Radio studio after being named as the July Business of the Month by the Star Valley Chamber of Commerce. Not Too Shabby is celebrating their 10th year in business this summer.

(0:00) And the monthly interview with the Star Valley Chamber of Commerce and their Business of the (0:06) Month. And for the month of July, Not Too Shabby in Thane has been selected as the Chamber’s Business (0:11) of the Month. Devin Wright, owner of Not Too Shabby, joining me live in studio today.

Devin, (0:16) good morning. How are you doing today? Hi, thanks for having me. I’m great.

(0:19) Absolutely. Well, congratulations on the Business of the Month nomination. When I (0:23) think about Not Too Shabby and why the Chamber would select you, I think about (0:28) all the different things you offer and just kind of the sustainability of that store.

So tell us (0:33) about Not Too Shabby and give us a little history lesson on it, if you will. So we started 10 years (0:38) ago. We opened a store in Afton.

And growing up, my mom always did craft fairs and we were always (0:44) making stuff. So we’d just sell it at craft fairs. And then when I went to college in Laramie, I (0:49) would haul stuff down there to a flea market that my aunt took care of.

And then we saw this little (0:54) place available between Afton and Grover and I told my mom, we only have to make $30 a day to (1:01) make rent. Let’s try it for one year and see what happens. So her and my aunt went in on it and (1:07) she ran it while I went back to college.

And then I came back and we moved to Thane. My aunt moved (1:13) here from Laramie and we’ve been in Thane for nine years. So 10 years in business this summer.

(1:19) Very cool. Well, congratulations. I didn’t even realize that.

So perfect timing. 10 years this (1:23) summer that you’ve been in business. And so your current location right on the south end of Thane (1:28) as you’re driving in, what do people find when they go into Not Too Shabby? We kind of have a (1:32) little bit of everything.

I think having my mom, myself and my aunt, we got three different (1:39) generations of people. So we all like different things and we just provide a lot of variety there. (1:45) And we have gifts and antiques and home decor, lots of seasonal decor.

And do you make a lot of (1:51) it yourselves? Yes. I would say maybe 50% at this point. We order a lot in, but we’re always (1:57) making things and creating new projects.

Perfect. Tell us about the name Not Too Shabby. How did (2:03) that originate? I don’t even know.

That was the hardest part. We wanted to open a business and (2:08) you have to have a name. So we just kind of threw things out there.

And we mix a lot of like (2:14) antiques and old stuff. So we thought Not Too Shabby just kind of suited us well. Perfect.

(2:19) And I always think about no matter what business it is, it’s hard to run a business. It is so hard (2:26) to run a business and to make it 10 years is a huge accomplishment. What do you attribute (2:31) the success of Not Too Shabby to? I would say just keeping it very broad and (2:37) very broad target audience, not being too specific on who we’re trying to get because (2:42) we want every age, every demographic to want to shop there and just providing a variety, (2:48) I think helps a lot.

And we’ve dedicated a lot of time and having my whole family involved, (2:55) I think helps. Absolutely. Now you mentioned it kind of started out going to craft shows (2:58) and fairs and things.

Do you still do that today? A little bit here and there, but we don’t have any (3:03) employees. So we’re always trying to just keep the store up and running. So that’s where we spend (3:09) most of our time is at the store, but we always do the holiday craft fair in Afton every year and (3:16) maybe a few here and there.

Perfect. Now you mentioned the variety that you have. (3:22) Are there some maybe products that are your personal favorite that you love making the most (3:27) and that brings the most happiness or joy, I guess, to your job and what you do? (3:33) I specifically make like hand-lettered signs.

So I paint quotes and words and I do custom orders. (3:41) And then my mom’s go-to is gnomes, these little wooden gnomes. She’s made over 2000.

We quit (3:49) counting at 2000. And then she also does wooden cutouts of wildlife and whatnot. And then my aunt (3:55) does floral stuff.

So she was a florist and so she does anything in that department. (4:02) Okay. Very cool.

What’s the best way to connect with Not Too Shabby? I know you guys have some (4:08) social media, right? I would say Facebook and Instagram is our (4:12) big ones. We’re always updating when we get new merchandise and that’s where to find us. (4:17) What’s coming up in the next 10 years for Not Too Shabby? (4:22) We just hope to sustain and continue serving our community with a place to shop, a go-to place for (4:30) gifts and home decor, seasonal and everyday decor.

(4:33) There really is a little something about everything. I know that my wife will go in (4:38) every once in a while and she’ll always find something really cool and unique. (4:43) I would hate to put it into just a single box of it being a craft store, right? Because there is (4:50) so much variety in there.

I don’t think until people go in, they really realize that. (4:54) I know a lot of couples come in and a lot of times their husbands are like, (4:58) oh, wow, it’s actually pretty cool in here. They’re not sitting in the car like a lot of (5:03) stores.

Love it. In studio this morning is Devin Wright, owner of Not Too Shabby, (5:09) the Starbody Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month for the month of July. (5:12) Congratulations again, Devin.

Anything we missed that you’d like to mention about the store? (5:16) We will be having our 10-year anniversary sale in August, August 29th, that’s Saturday. It’ll go (5:22) all day and we usually do free lunch and treats and raffles and it’s just a fun day. (5:28) Come see us.

(5:29) So stay tuned for details for that in August and I guess if people follow Not Too Shabby (5:34) on social media, then they’ll see the details when that happens, right? (5:37) Yep. (5:37) Perfect. Not Too Shabby, Devin Wright in studio is the July Star Valley Chamber of Commerce (5:43) Business of the Month.

Devin, thanks so much for your time. Appreciate it. (5:45) Thanks so much.

(5:46) It’s all part of the weekday wake up this morning on SVI Radio.
