The Star Valley Cross-Country teams ran at the Wasatch Rendezvous this past Saturday in a unique format that changed up the typical meet the runners see. The meet was run in waves with races starting every two minutes and each wave comprised of each teams first, second, third runner etc., all the way up to seven. At the end of the day, some 39 schools competed in some form and the Star Valley girls placed third overall.

Kellsie Dunne, Tylita Bond and Carlee Angell were all well under 21 minutes with Adrie Kennington just a few seconds shy of hitting that same mark.

On the boys side, Luke Harris and Caleb Crowther again led the way with fast times well under 17 minutes.

“It was kind of a unique opportunity,” answered head coach Ty Draney. “I think that probably the biggest takeaway was for our kids to race individually. Because they were all against their own wave and it was a little different mind set. I think there was some valuable information learned there. It was a little tougher course than we thought which is good. Some would argue that Utah is the toughest state in the country for cross-country so we have some work to do.”

This week will be a shorter one with the program running in the Rexburg Classico in Rexburg, Idaho this Thursday. It sets up another Thursday outing as they will run the Homecoming Under the Lights on October 1. This race will take place during the halftime of the Powder Puff flag football game and other Homecoming activities with bleachers full of their classmates. This race was run last year for the first time and had such a positive reaction it is back again this year.

“We keep saying that times don’t matter much and runners are gonna run,” Draney said. “But this course is super flat so I’m expecting some fast times and then we’ll spend a few weeks tuning up against some Idaho schools and hope to run fast. We want to keep passing kids in jerseys from other teams as we hit the postseason.”
