While the rest of the teams for high school sports will wait until Monday for their first official practices, the Star Valley High School Golf program along with other golfers from the state began their 2025 season this week. For head coach Kelly Fullmer, who is creeping up on 20 years leading the program, he is pleased with the depth of the players out for the Crimson and Gold.
“We had about 45 kids tryout and we’re planning on keeping 24 to 28 of them so we will have to cut down a bit I’m afraid,” he said. “But that’s a good problem to have.”
Tryouts were this past Monday and plenty of returning players will vie with newcomers for this year’s teams who host the Star Valley Invitational at Valley View Golf Course today and tomorrow. Green River, Rock Springs, Jackson, Kemmerer, Lyman and Pinedale are expected to be in attendance.
The Braves return several varsity players from a team that had individuals qualify for the state tournament in 2024 but the program missed the cut in the highly competitive 4A West which has eight teams instead of seven of the 4A East.
“We are pretty deep on our varsity side,” Fullmer continued. “We have a lot of kids back who can shoot so we’ll have some kids who will be staying home from tournaments after just being a couple strokes back. I think we are as deep as we’ve been.”
The Braves saw Aiden DeCora and Sean Stout depart due to graduation. Coming back as the top finisher at state is sophomore Deegan Hill who looks to lead the squad on a weekly basis in terms of his score card. Bran Fullmer, Kellan Stout, Daltyn DeCora, Ryan Horn and Mykell Nunez will be battling for the varsity spots each week as well.
On the girls side, the ladies will have to try and replace the 4A state individual champion, Jordyn Horsley, who is now playing for Metro State in Denver. Kambree Johnson also exhausted her eligibility as a senior last year. The good news is that most of their teammates return in 2025. Kate Ricks, Amelia Green and Paylan Merritt are all back after helping the Lady Braves to a fifth place finish last year as a team. The Lady Braves have a total of eight players out which is a large number compared to some other 4A squads who do not field a team due to questions of depth.
The SVHS teams will hit the road for the remainder of the season after this week’s tournament with a trip to Lander on August 18-19 up next on the slate. The 4A West Regionals will take place September 11-12 in Evanston before the state tournament which will be played in Cheyenne.
