• Snake River Shootout is this week
The SVHS Golf teams were back in action this past week on August 17-18 as they traveled to Evanston to play the Purple Sage Course and the Red Devil Invite. The boys team was without the services of top player and returning all-stater, P.J. Horsley.
“He has inflamed tendons in his elbow, ironically from playing too much golf,” replied head coach Kelly Fullmer. “His scores are vital to our boys team’s success going into the state qualifier in just a little over two weeks, so we hope he heals up quickly and feels better.”
The core group of varsity boys were all within a few strokes of each other.
“We played junior Sean Stout in our number one position, and our faith in him was justified as he led the team in scoring,” Fullmer continued. “Although no golfer stood out with exceptional play, all our varsity played steady, good golf. The three boys we took as designated junior varsity players carded scores very close or equal to the varsity scores showing the depth we have this season, something we have not always enjoyed.”
The Lady Braves are also enjoying a deep squad this season.
“We took five girls to the tournament, proud that we not only could we field a full girls team, but also that we left five junior varsity girls at home,” Fullmer continued. “We have ten girls on the team this season, the most of for any team I’ve encountered so far showing not only the interest in golf our valley but also the desire of our girls to get involved in a sport.”
“Junior Jordyn Horsley led the Lady Braves to a competitive team score on a tough, long golf course—a course that resembles our own only in the fact that it has 18 holes. One of the biggest challenges in golf is having to adapt to different courses and playing conditions each week.”
That ability to adapt will be on display this week as the SVHS teams will join with Jackson Hole High School in what has been coined the Snake River Shootout. The week will have a round at Teton Pines in Jackson on Wednesday and then at Cedar Creek at Star Valley Ranch on Thursday. A total of six teams are expected to compete.
