The Town of Afton says the recent mud slide that occurred earlier this year in Swift Creek canyon has not begun to slide again, despite the recent rain and muddy water.

“There is a lot of water coming down the slide from the rain which is washing mud into Swift Creek, but the material in the slide has stayed put,” said Afton Mayor Jeff Jensen Tuesday evening. “Hopefully it doesn’t slide. We are monitoring it daily.”

The initial slide occurred in early June and was caused by heavy runoff from high snowpack, combined with a wet and rainy spring. The slide promoted a multi-week closure of the Swift Creek Canyon hiking trail leading up to the intermittent spring. The Town of Afton monitored the slide activity throughout, ensuring the town’s water source and infrastructure was not damaged. Once the slide had stopped, the town in conjunction with the National Forest Service, cleaned and rebuilt the trail. The trail opened June 24.
