SVHS Band Director Kurt Sand Discusses State Competition

“They do bring an energy and excitement to our events that I’m really proud of” – Kurt Sand, talking about his Star Valley High School marching band and the impact they have on the atmosphere of game day here in the Valley. “They represent us well that is for sure”

The high school’s marching band headed out to state over this weekend where they are trying to bring home more hardware to add to the Braves legacy over the years. The band performed today in the early 3rd of the competition and awards will be handed out at 6:15pm if all stays right on schedule.

Mr. Sand believes one of the keys to his student’s success as a band is their commitment over the summer as many of his kids attend music camps at USU and ISU before coming to Star Valley’s camp which takes place in July around the end of the month and goes for a week. This year the drum majors got to participate in a leadership camp as well with Doctor Kloss from Idaho State also taking place in July.

“If you’re going to do something you might as well do it right and do it well” added Sand about his personal motto regarding putting hard work into the season as a band and what he feels the students feel regarding their own performance. “Our goal has never been the rating [] our goal is simply to walk off the floor at the end of the performance and have no regrets and feel extremely proud that we did our absolute best performance we had in us”

Kurt Sand believes this mentality is what allows the band to set their own standard so high is to compete not against the rest of the state but to compete against themselves each and every performance to be sure that when they finish their performance they can say that everything they had was left out there on the floor.

The Director doesn’t believe the band feels their best performance was given on homecoming this year but bounced back strongly during their friends and family performance and feels this bounce back performance will help the confidence level heading up to State this weekend. Results from state will be announced tonight at 6:15pm and we look forward to seeing how the Braves did as they compete with the rest of the Wyoming Bands to take home the title.
