SVHS hosts Spring golf invite in Afton

Not long after the last of the snow in the shadowy portions of Star Valley View Golf Course had melted, teams from Western Wyoming were in Afton to shake off the winter rust as part of spring golf.

Jackson, Pinedale, Kemmerer, Evanston, Lyman and Star Valley played a round on Friday with the SVHS boys and the Jackson girls winning the team outcomes.

Kaden Spaulding led the way for the Braves with a score of 75 which was the best individual score of the day. Star Valley finished with a score of 327, edging Evanston by three strokes.

The Jackson girls shot a 281, finishing 22 strokes in front of second-place Kemmerer. Evanston was a close third with a score of 304. The Lady Devils had the best individual score as Kyra Sponenburgh shot an 86 to win the day.

“It was nice for Kaden to win his last high school tournament,” said SVHS head coach Kelly Fullmer. “As a two-time all-conference, all-state golfer, we’ll miss his contribution this coming season.”

It will be a theme for the next group of SVHS golfers who will be working on their craft this summer. According to Fullmer, the team will graduate three senior girls; leaving the team short of a full squad.

“We will lose three senior girl golfers this season and will miss their leadership and high level of performance,” he said. “None of our senior girls played at home last week due to other activity commitments. Our only girl, sophomore Taylor Erickson, shot 108, her best competitive score yet, so we’re pleased to see she’s starting the season with improvement. She’ll join returning junior Riley Heward this coming season to anchor our girls’ team.”

The Spring season will continue for the area golfers as they travel to Lander this Friday to face off against a Tiger program which claimed both the boys and girls team championships last Fall.

“Lander is returning four of the five players who won the state team title last year in Riverton,” Fullmer concluded. “So we will face our toughest competition this coming season early.”
